A Solucent™ metal fabric shading system from Cambridge Architectural sleekly veils the Medicine Lake Union Building at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Behind the striking stainless steel fabric, the building interior enjoys a more comfortable environment and reduced cooling costs.
The facility is part of UW Medicine's new research hub in the South Lake Union area of Seattle. Cambridge's architectural mesh was installed in tension over the windows on the exterior facade of the building in order to shade the sun, optimizing the amount of daylight entering the building and reducing solar heat gain.
Solucent is a first-of-its-kind shading and daylighting system. It significantly reduces solar glare, light pollution and solar heat gain, but unlike conventional shading materials, architectural mesh also promotes airflow and building security. In the Medicine Lake Union Building, Solucent also shows off its unique ability to maintain views out of the building - the inherent nature of architectural mesh allows it to filter light but remain transparent, so as not to block outside views.
The unique characteristics of mesh also allow it to take on more than one aesthetic. For example, when viewed at extreme angles, the mesh appears solid. But when viewed head on, it becomes very transparent. At the University of Washington, mesh adds a versatile and engaging exterior building component.
Construction on the UW Medicine Building was completed in the Spring of 2008. The project team consists of architect Perkins+Will, Seattle, WA and contractor/installer Benson Industries, Portland, OR.

| Economic Stimulus |
| The recently passed $819 billion economic stimulus package will put a strict emphasis on, and create great opportunities for, the green building industry in the United States. Cambridge Architectural manufactures a sustainable material that has long been a part of eco-friendly, energy-saving architecture. Now more than ever, building and construction projects will need to incorporate the most responsible design elements available – Cambridge is a company that you can turn to for unique and LEED® contributing architectural systems, most notably Solucent and Parkade™. |
This Solucent system provides transparency, making daylight available inside and allowing people to see outside.
