Cambridge and Leading U.S. Architectural Firm Collaborate in Las Vegas

One of the most talked about projects in the architectural community today is CityCenter Las Vegas – an immense urban resort development on the strip consisting of hotels, residences, spas, dining and shopping destinations. Unveiled in December 2009, CityCenter is the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States, setting the gold standard for luxury and modern architecture.

At the heart of CityCenter lies the Aria Resort & Casino, the tallest structure in the development containing 4,000 rooms, designed by world-renowned Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. The resort's ambitious design required that all building elements be highly refined both visually and functionally. Pelli Clarke Pelli chose a Cambridge Architectural mesh facade to screen the exterior of the Aria's pool deck because it met, if not exceeded, these requirements.

Cambridge's facade smoothly undulates along the podium structure on Frank Sinatra Boulevard, dressing exterior walls and screening the pool deck's exit stairway. The visual result is a dramatically draped mesh exterior that shines brilliantly during the day and produces a rich luster from projected light at night. The facade provides yet another "wow" factor, matching the unrivaled luxury of CityCenter Las Vegas.

The success of the Aria Resort & Casino facade project was dependent on effective collaboration between the architectural firm and the material manufacturer. Pelli Clarke Pelli came to Cambridge with their design, and Cambridge was able to successfully build the design using architectural mesh. In fact, Cambridge went one step further by creating a brand new mesh pattern just for this project. The new pattern, Pellican, was named in honor of the firm.

"It was great working with Cambridge," says Peter Follett, Senior Associate with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. "They were very willing to help us develop the right mesh pattern and the right density, adjusting their metal fabric system to facilitate the exact design we wanted."

Construction on the Aria Resort & Casino facade was completed in Fall 2009. The project team consists of architect Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, New Haven, CT and general contractor Perini Building Company, Henderson, NV.

Pelli Clarke Pelli and Cambridge Architectural Win Metal Design Award

The mesh facade at the Aria Resort & Casino – the centerpiece of Las Vegas' new CityCenter development – was chosen as the winner in the "Metal Accessories" category of the 2010 Metal Architecture Design Awards. The project is showcased in the July issue of Metal Architecture, and is currently featured online.

After extensive research and development, Cambridge's engineering team was able to modify their Eclipse™ attachment so that it would curve laterally – an uncommon practice in architectural mesh system design. By successfully curving the Eclipse attachment tubes, the team was able to create stunning and dynamic curved metal fabric panels to bring Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects' vision to life.
