South African Embassy
Washington, D.C. | Sun Screen
A modernization and expansion of the embassy closed off an open courtyard and added a glass curtain wall between two Dutch Colonial limestone buildings. Woven mesh fabric connects the old with the new and provides a welcoming area for visitors to the embassy. The mesh acts as sunscreen and wraps around the structure in a single continuous ribbon that also becomes the ceiling for the entryway.
"While giving respect to history, we used Cambridge mesh to help marry the two historic structures with a new progressive space and design."
