University of Calgary Taylor Family Library

Calgary, Alberta, Canada | Decorative Façade

The state-of-the-art facility houses more than nine million print and digital assets. Mesh shades and protects public space and the important documents contained in the glassed-in area while giving the library a modern aesthetic that matches the innovative research and learning center. The openness of the stainless fabric still provides ambient daylight and unobstructed views to the campus quad. By reducing solar heat gain and optimizing energy performance, the mesh contributes to the library’s LEED Gold Certification.

"Kasian selected the stainless steel mesh used as a screening device on the exterior of the building for three primary reasons. First, the mesh reduced the amount of solar heat gain into the Information Commons – a glass box intended to be the centerpiece of the library. Second the mesh diminished glare, and thirdly the screen leant an interesting and beautiful dimension to the architectural and aesthetic quality of the building."
